Whoop ‘n’ Wail Represents… is a new writing showcase with a difference. With six short pieces by both male and female playwrights, all must pass the Bechdel Test, ensuring the female characters’ contribution is significant to the plot. Inspired by Alison Bechdel’s now famous 1987 comic strip, The Rule, the test has become the benchmark for gauging fair gender representation on stage and screen and is, Whoop ‘n’ Wail believe, the lowest bar.

As guest contributors, Whoop ‘n’ Wail founders Ali Kemp and Deborah Klayman tell 17Percent about the drive behind the showcase and their plans for their next night, Represents… Desire.

“If I love you, I have to make you conscious of the things that you do not see”. This is the mantra that informs my Facebook wall and my twitter feed. These are the words of James Baldwin, an American novelist, essayist, playwright, poet and social critic. Baldwin conceived of political consciousness as an offshoot of deep care. He thought of love as an unveiling of societal ignorance and a marker of resilience.  His conception of love made space for the scrapes of suffering and glint of adventure that form part of political and social activism. He lived in a time before ‘hashtags’ , ‘likes’, ‘retweets’ and ‘shares’  but his words populate memes that zip across digital space and take up residence on cardboard signs at on the ground protests.

Our reading team are going to be working overtime to get through the more than sixty new plays we have received – we are feeling very inspired and excited to see such a variety of subjects and settings that place female characters in central roles.
