Well here we are. At Whoop ‘n’ Wail HQ we can’t quite believe that we are about to head to the theatre for our third Whoop ‘n’ Wail Represents….

As always, Debs and I have not seen what the actors and directors have been doing with each piece of writing; during the tech day today we will meet a lot of the actors for the first time; and this evening will be the first time that we see the fruits of all their creativity. We can’t wait!

We have a busy day ahead, coordinating 6 technical rehearsals with 6 directors and 6 casts, so, as always, Ali is on her way with a batch of those all important WnW Caramac cookies to keep everyone going.

Here are Whoop ‘n’ Wail HQ we are excitedly moving into the next phase of pre-production. It is great to be working with our fantastic team of directors: Marc Kelly, Janet Palmer, James Callas Ball and Georgie Weedon, who are Represents… first timers; and Represents… returners Alice Bonifacio and Paul Kevin-Taylor, all of whom have been busy casting and getting rehearsals underway.

Debs and I have also been busy in the last few days getting our publicity out and inviting press and industry to the show. This is our third Represents.. showcase and although we know what we are doing now – well sort of – we are always looking at how we can further promote playwriting which better represents the world in which we live.

If you think you might be interested, please read the brief below and email us with the following details.

  • Your contact details
  • Your directing CV (which must include at least two professional credits)
  • Confirmation of your availability for the project including the tech rehearsal on Monday 27th April.
  • Confirmation that you have read the Director’s Brief below and agree to the terms.

As an actress Amy has appeared as Mary in BBC1’s Call the Midwife, Stephen Frears’ Phillomena and has worked for Arcola Theatre, Kneehigh Theatre, for Birmingham Repetory Theatre and West Yorkshire Playhouse. As a poet she is the current UK Anti-Slam Champ! She is also published, her first collection Are You As Single As That Cream? is available for purchase and she can regularly be found gigging around the place.

Mayday! Call for submissions – one week till the deadline

Calling all playwrights: you have just one more week to get your creative juices around ‘Mayday’.

A very big thank you to all those who have already submitted your 15 minute plays for consideration for the next Whoop ‘n’ Wail Represents…

We are very excited to be putting the spotlight on up and coming play writing talent from the UK and with International Women’s Day on the 8th March, now is the time now is the time to write for Represents… and put fair gender representation centre stage.

Each play must pass the Bechdel Test – that is, it must include at least two female characters, who at some stage talk to each other about something other than a man. As a jumping off point, Mayday is the theme.

WRITER’S SUBMISSION BRIEF

What is Represents…?

With brand new plays from both male and female writers, Represents…is a showcase with a difference.

Whoop ‘n’ Wail have committed to achieving gender equality on the UK stage by creating a night of entertaining, engaging theatre with all plays having significant roles for women.

Consisting of six fifteen-minute shorts, each piece of writing must pass the Bechdel Test – they must include at least two named female characters who, at some stage, talk to each other about something other than a man. Inspired by Alison Bechdel’s 1987 comic strip, The Rules, the Bechdel Test has become the benchmark for gauging fair representation on stage and screen.

The sold-out launch of Represents… in Nov 2014 featured work by both established and emerging playwrights and directors invited by the curators to kick off the inaugural event. Represents…Desire
